Teaching Philosophy
In my 25-year career as a music educator, I have had many experiences that have shaped my teaching philosophy. I received my BA in Music Education with a piano concentration from Xinghai Conservatory of Music in China, and my Master’s degree in Music Performance with a concentration in collaborative piano at the State University of New York (SUNY)at Fredonia. My continuing education involves a number of professional certification programs, including the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). I have toured throughout southern China, North America, performed in ensembles for university recitals, juries, opera scenes, and so on, as well as for community events.
I have experience instructing students at all levels and backgrounds from ages 4-84 both in the United States and China, but specialize in working with young children. I currently own a private piano studio in Fredonia. NY, and serve as music director at a local church.
Learning an instrument can offer so many benefits, such as discipline, patience, goal-setting, problem-solving, creativity, getting along with others, and the list goes on. I am excited about having music become a lifetime of joy for you.
I developed a curriculum that is comprehensive, addressing every student’s individual strengths/weaknesses as well as encouraging and empowering them to express individuality≥ as musicians. In addition to established method books, I have devised my own course which fosters healthy, effortless technique and provides foundational knowledge such as theory, sight-reading and improvisational skills.
Finally, my studio does participate in some testing programs such as The Piano Guild and RCM examinations. These can be very effective at motivating dedicated students to reach new levels of musicianship and give them the confidence to participate in public events (recitals, competitions, etc.).
